Ephesians 5:1-20. --MEN MARK TUMANDAN--

From the book of Ephesians 5:1-20.

--MEN MARK TUMANDAN--

1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Verse 1-7 is entitled WALKING IN LOVE, verse 8-14 entitled WALKING IN LIGHT and verse 15-20 entitled WALKING IN WISDOM.

Verse 1, in King James Version translated this way "Therefore be imitators of God as dear children". One always does well to imitate God in whatever things he does: justice, forbearance, faithfulness to one's word. We should imitate the way of God, or we should follow his way. No matter what good is our way, it must be in the way of God. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD,For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." according in Isa. 55:8-9.

There are times that it seems that our ways is good, but it only leads us closer in hell.

verse 2, indicated, implies that we must walk in love. Walking in love as Christ loved as. This is a command, to love one another.

We have an example and an evidence that Christ loved as that that is he gave himself for us. John have written that "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Jn. 3:16.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

The Ephesians were once in darkness, but when they obeyed the gospel, they are now saints. And they were advised by the Apostle Paul to free from all immorality and not be partakers of them but rather reproved them as seen in verse 11, this is also the same in the letter of Apostle Paul in 1 Tim. 5:20-22
"Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear"

"Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure"

Not only that we will free from immorality, but we must expose, reprove and rebuke them. How can one expose, reprove and rebuke the sinner if he is also like him? How can a father tell his son not to drink wine, not to use cigarretes if he also has those vices?

Verse 14 "Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light".

There are sometimes that we fall asleep, we are dead. This does not imply a literal death but a spiritaul death. There are two kinds of death, the one is when the spirit leaves the body which is the PHYCAL DEATH and the other one is when the man drift away from God. If we commit sin, automatically we encountered death, our spirit depart from God. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23).
The wages of our sin is death.

John 8:12 “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Verse 15, See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise.

We must be wise, as also said in Matt. 10:16 ".. be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."

The serpents always know who are his enemy and also we too. We should know that our enemy is the Satan. Harmless as doves signifies that we must not be harmful to others.

Verse 16, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

This means that we should use our time wisely and well and be on constant gurad lest we fall asleep and are mastered by the evils which surround us!.

Verse 17-20

17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

It is so important that we should know what the will of the Lord is. One of the will of the Lord is that he built a church (Matt. 16:18), the will of the Lord is one must believe and be baptized to be saved (Mark 16:16).

Also in verse 19, we are adivise not to drunk wine. Why we should not drink wine? The answer is found in Prov. 20:1. Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

We are told to be wise, then how can we be wise if we drink wine? The writer of Proverbs said that if we drink wine, then we are not wise.

Instead of drinking wine, we rather Give thanks unto God, we rather sing spiritual songs, making melody in our hearts. The instrument is our heart, and not the musical instruments.
