THE BAPTISM IN THE CONTEXT OF FREEDOM OF RELIGION - MEN MARK A. TUMANDAN

THE BAPTISM IN THE CONTEXT OF FREEDOM OF RELIGION

In all matters of religious issues, when it comes to Christianity, the basis of our faith is in the Scripture. To determine therefore if it is safe and right to do such thing is to check in the Bible, the Scripture which is composed of 66 Books, from Genesis to Revelation.
As we live now in the Gospel Age, the source of authority in matters of religious actions both in exercising our freedom to believe and freedom to act on ones believe must be in the New Testament.
Baptism is a Command of Christ
Baptism is a command of Jesus for it is written “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matt. 28:18-20
Matthew records about baptism and so also Mark in chapter 16 verse 16 “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved”.
No wonder when the first gospel sermon was preached by Peter on the day of Pentecost, he said “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38
When the Eunuch asked what hinder him not to be baptized considering he already understood what he read, Apostle Luke records that “and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.” Acts 8:38
As we move forward in the Book of Acts, in chapter 9 verse 18, Saul “and arose, and was baptized”.  He was baptized by Ananias.
Cornelius was baptized in the 10th chapter of the Book of Acts; definitely Peter administered his baptism for Peter “commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.”

Baptism To Have Fellowship With the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Christ
Romans 6:3-6 “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrectionknowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.”

Death, Burial and Resurrection of Christ is the GOSPEL
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand,  by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. (1 Cor. 15:1-3)
The same gospel Paul preached to the Romans wherein he said “ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
The righteouesness of God is revealed in the gospel of Christ thus baptism is indeed important.

Element of the Baptism
There is now “One Baptism” as Paul said to the Ephesians in his letter (Eph. 4:4)
The Eunuch said to Philip “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”
The conclusion of Peter in regard to the case of Gentiles  “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.” Acts 10:47-48.
It is clearly seen from the Scripture that the New Testament Baptism existing today is the water baptism.
Let us study the Water Baptism  in the Context of Freedom of Religion.
FREEDOM OF RELIGION
Freedom of religion is the right of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance. It is generally recognized to also include the freedom to change religion or to not follow any religion (sometimes referred to as “freedom from religion”)By Katharine Gammon, Freedom of Religion, https://www.livescience.com/21328-freedom-of-religion.html

“Religious freedom is a fundamental right which is entitled to the highest priority and the amplest protection among human rights, for it involves the relationship of man to his Creator (Chief Justice Enrique M. Fernando's separate opinion in German vs. Barangan, 135 SCRA 514, 530-531).

In the Philippines setting, the Freedom of Religion is expressly manifested in the 1987 Philippines Constitution.

Section 5, Article III, 1987 Constitution states that “No law shall be made respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference, shall forever be allowed. No religious test shall be required for the exercise of civil or political rights.”

We are blessed of living in a country wherein the Freedom of Religion is duly recognized.

TWO ASPECTS OF FREEDOM OF RELIGION

One should also remember that “Freedom of Religion” has two aspects, first “Freedom to believe or not to believe” then the second one is “Freedom to act on one’s believe”.

The right to religious profession and worship has a two-fold aspect, vis., freedom to believe and freedom to act on one's belief. The first is absolute as long as the belief is confined within the realm of thought. The second is subject to regulation where the belief is translated into external acts that affect the public welfare (J. Cruz, Constitutional Law, 1991 Ed., pp. 176-177).

LIMITATION ON THE EXERCISE OF FREEDOM OF RELIGION
The sole justification for a prior restraint or limitation on the exercise of religious freedom (according to the late Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee in his dissenting opinion in German vs. Barangan, 135 SCRA 514, 517) is the existence of agrave and present danger of a character both grave and imminent, of a serious evil to public safety, public morals, public health or any other legitimate public interest, that the State has a right (and duty) to prevent." Absent such a threat to public safety, the expulsion of the petitioners from the schools is not justified. (Narvasa, C.J., Feliciano, Bidin, Regalado, Davide, Jr., Romero, Nocon, Bellosillo, Melo and Campos, Jr., JJ., concur.http://www.lawphil.net/judjuris/juri1993/mar1993/gr_95770_1993.html )

It is proven above that the element of baptism is water, thus there is no violation in the context of Freedom of Religion both in freedom to believe and freedom to act on one’s believe when one immersed in the water as he believes that his sins be forgiven.
But suppose if Christians practice that the element in baptism is literal blood of human as symbol for the blood of Christ, is this practice then be justifiable in the name of freedom of religion? Certainly not.
Think of how many human blood need to be shed for someone to be immersed for the remission of his sins if that is the case.
Certainly,  one can see the beauty of baptism that in an element of water, the Lord use it for baptism in such way the sins be forgiven.

THE SON EXALTED ABOVE ANGELS YET MADE LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS

In Hebrews chapter one the writer points that Jesus has "so much better than the angels" verse 4, no angel has ever called "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You", "I will be to Him a Father and He shall be to Me a Son" except to Jesus alone.

The Hebrew writer then points that on contrary the angels are commanded to worship Jesus in verse six.

In verse eight the Father recognize Jesus as God by stating "Your throne , O God is forever and ever, a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom." until in verse thirteen the supremacy of Jesus over the angels are pointed.

But why then in the same Book, the Hebrew writer in chapter two verse nine it says "But we see Jesus who was made a littler lower than the angels"?

How then Jesus be supreme to the angels then on the other hand made little lower than the angels?

The answer is in verse three chapter one, Jesus is the brightness of the Father and the express image of His person; Jesus is Deity as the Father is Deity. From the beginning the preeminence of Jesus is already there.

In John chapter one verse one to five, the Word is Eternal, the Word with God and the Word was God. All things were made through Him and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

But  How Then Jesus Made A Little Lower Than The Angels?

The writer of the Book of Hebrew said in in chapter two verse six to eight what was written in the Book of Psalms the eight chapter verses four to six:

"What is man, that You are mindful of him? or the son of man that You take care of him?
You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor; And set him over the works of Your hands. You have put all things in subjection under his feet"

God is mindful of man and He made man a little lower than the angels.

When in due time according to Apostle Paul in Galatians chapter four verse four God sent forth His Son, born of a woman. Clearly the Son who is Jesus was born as a man, had flesh and bones.

This nature of Jesus as a man not as an angel is the reason He was made a little lower than the angels.
The earthly vessel, the body that the Son took made Him a little lower than the angels.

But in terms of Divine Nature, Jesus "being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God" in these reason Jesus is exalted above angels. (Phil. 2:6)

Why Then Jesus Came As A Man Not As Angel?

Jesus did not come as a man who is like Herod but He take the form of a bond-servant as Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians saints. What a humility that Jesus has shown to us.

Why did He not come as an angel? The answer is "And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death..." Jesus sacrificially and humbly submit to death, the Holy Scriptures says "even the death of the cross" Heb. 2:8. The death as a criminal.

Why then Jesus made a little lower than the angels? To Him to suffer death, crowned with glory and honor, that He by the grace of God, might taste death for every one as the Book of Hebrews says in chapter two verse nine.

Jesus was humbly put to death because "without shedding of blood there is no remission" Heb. 9:22. There is no forgiveness of sins, no basis for salvation without the death of Jesus.

In chapter ten from verse five down to verse eighteen the death of Jesus fulfills God's will and a Perfect Sacrifice.

Hebrews 10:5-18 English Standard Version (ESV)

Consequently, when Christ[a] came into the world, he said,
“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
    but a body have you prepared for me;
in burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you have taken no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”
When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ[b] had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
17 then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

Jesus was a Perfect Sacrifice because as a Man, there was shedding of blood, then as Deity He overcome the death through His Resurrection by the Father.

Conclusion:
1. Why not submit to Jesus today through baptism to have contact in his blood? Romans 6:1-3
2. What are you waiting for? Repent, confessed Jesus is the Christ the Son of the Living God, then be immersed in water for the forgiveness of  your sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Romans 10:9)

Here, Where…

Introduction:
Hebrews 10:25 is a direct statement that authorizes the necessity of attending the “assembling” of the congregation of which we are members. The Hebrew writer reveals the importance of gathering with our brethren in God’s plan for our faithful-survival. Many have been misled, or have falsely concluded, that we can worship as “Christians-at-large”, or independent of the organization called the church. Some conclude, “I can worship in my deer stand” or others, on the way to the lake Sunday morning, say, “Okay kids, let’s think about God for a few minutes; that will be our church service today”.
There are things that are expressed; provided; and gained, only here in our assemblies. It is here that we express our hearts in worship to God.    It is here that we build up our brethren. It is here that we gain strength and encouragement from our brethren. David in Psalm 103:2 exhorts, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits”—unfortunately, some have forgotten the benefits of doing the will of God.
There is something wonderful to being involved in the assembling of the church in this place. We need to be here at every opportunity to fulfill our role, and to receive the benefits that are intended to be ours. Let’s open the Scriptures and seek to encourage our desire to…

Be Here, Where We Worship God:
Another statement of David found in Psalm 122:1 declares, “I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go into the house of the Lord." This is a declaration of one who understands “the opportunity” of gathering with the people of God for worship. The New Testament refers to the church as “the house of God” (1 Timothy 3:15), so putting these two similar thoughts together, are you “Glad to gather with the church”? Those who understand “the opportunity” of gathering with the people of God for worship, are glad to do so, each and every time they can.
Gathering with our brethren in worship is a blessed opportunity that should be eagerly desired.
When we understand that worship is an opportunity to participate in something great.
The Old Testament Prophet Isaiah gives us an interesting insight to “coming before the presence of God in worship”. We clearly see that God is to be “hallowed”—God is to be reverenced in the highest form of reverence.Isaiah 6:1-3 is a glimpse into the throne room of Heaven, and God on His throne. In that passage Isaiah was given this opportunity to see the Lord sitting on His throne. There were seraphim (Winged Heavenly Host) over the throne of God and they praised God with the words, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory” (v. 3)—these are very similar to the words of “worship” recorded in Revelation 4:8-11. What is particularly interesting to see is the “reverence” of the seraphim; who covered their faces in the presence of God (v.2). If the host of Heaven cover their faces in the presence of God, how reverent should we be as we come to His throne in worship?
I am afraid with our culture’s desire to make all things more and more casual, we have lost sight of what it means to enter into the presence of God in worship. It seems as though today we are supposed to treat everything in life like it has little value, or it requires as little an effort as possible. There is no way to fully express the importance of our hope in God, through Christ, but is worth every moment it requires, even if the expectation required every moment of our life. It is awesome to be invited to reverence God in worship. We are given an opportunity to join in the worship of the Almighty Father, the One who willed into existence all that is, that One who is from forever and will forever be, has invited you (John 4:24).
What is reflected by our rejection of His invitation by choosing distractions from attending?

Be Here, Where We Build Up Our Brethren:
Our brethren are facing the difficulties of this world and need a reliable source of strengthening. The Scriptures record several examples of those who really encouraged the best in others: Like Barnabas, in Acts 4:36-37, who is said to be born of encouragement—the “son of encouragement”. He was present and willing to do what he could, with what he had. Like Tabitha, in Acts 9:36-39, who made clothes for those in need. While she lived, she was present and willing to do what she could, with the ability that she had. Like Epaphroditus, in Philippians 2:25-30, who, not considering himself, supplied Paul with what he lacked. He was present and willing to suffer, so that others would not have to.
We need to apply great priority to our responsibility of being the encouragers of our brethren: We are to be the bringers of courage, like the brethren who came to visit Paul before his imprisonment (Acts 28:15). We encourage our brethren: By offering our brethren what we should (Romans 12:9-15). By providing the care that we all need—kindness, tenderheartedness, and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32). By seeking to provide for one another as God wants us to, “Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8-9). We encourage our brethren when we consistently attend every opportunity and willingly provide what we can, as we should.
What is reflected by our rejection of the opportunity to encourage our brethren’s hope of Heaven, by choosing distractions from attending?

Be Here, Where We are Built Up:
It is here that we are provided with a scheduled opportunity to “recharge our own spiritual-battery”. The family in Christ, of which we are a part, is to be a living example of what Solomon speaks of in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. If we are separate, and alone, we are weak and vulnerable. It is together with our brethren that we are strong and able to withstand.
In the New Testament: Paul says that we are woven together in Ephesians 4:16, “joined and knit together by what every joint supplies”. Peter, in 1 Peter 2:5, says that we are built together, “As living stones, in a living house”. These examples, both Old and New, teach us that we are supposed to be “together”.
Our own refreshing and reassuring comes from what we can only receive, when we are together. There is a picture of our need for togetherness in Hebrews 10:24, where we are told to “consider one another”. This means, we are to make a “reasoning observation” of each other’s well-being. We look at each other, for a demeanor determination. We listen to each other, for a dialogue of needs. We want to help; so, we want to know. In this same passage, the very next verse, we are told the “when” of these requirements (Hebrews 10:25). We are to not “forsake the assembling of ourselves together”—our gatherings are supposed to be the times when we fulfill our need to“consider one another”. The weekly services are scheduled times wherein our needs are being considered, our lives are enriched with more love, and we are encouraged to greater good works.
What is reflected by our rejection of the opportunity to receive our brethren’s help, by choosing distractions from attending?

Conclusion:
David in Psalm 122:1 declares, “I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go into the house of the Lord." When the church gathers we are given the opportunity to participate in something far greater than our self. We gather in answer to God’s invitation to come before Him in worship (John 4:24).
David also in Psalms 103:2 exhorts us to “forget not” the benefits of the Lord. We need to embrace the value of our participation in the plan of God, through Jesus Christ, our Savior.
The “assembling of ourselves together” is also about seeking and finding. Do you seek strength to face life?  This is a place of gaining strength and refreshing our strength. Do you seek salvation? This gathering provides us with an opportunity to obey the gospel plan and find our hope, in Christ. It’s time to take up your role “here, where” we seek Heaven. ~tss
